History of the Hyster Company
Hyster started making lifting machines more than 80 years ago when the logging industry was expanding throughout the Pacific Northwest. Electric Steel Foundry and Willamette Iron and Steel Works pioneered the development of machines for use in the logging industry.
The origin of the name Hyster
When a pile of logs was ready to be raised, loggers would shout “Hoist’er!” Hyster used this name when it engineered the industry’s earliest lift trucks. Willamette Iron and Steel became the Willamette Hyster company. The renamed company continued developing its heavy-duty lifting equipment. In 1935, the company designed its first forklift, which had a lifting capacity of 6,000 pounds.
As Hyster grew, it produced more powerful trucks with greater lift capacity. The demand for the equipment also increased around the world. It created an export department in 1944 to ship products internationally. Two years later, it opened a plant for mass production in Danville, Illinois.
Hyster is acquired by NACCO
Hyster manufactured compaction machinery and road rollers, along with a line of logging winches and compactor attachments. NACCO Industries purchased the company in 1989, and Hyster continued to focus on innovation and durability. In 2005, it rolled out a complete new generation of internal combustion engine trucks. Three years later, it released electric counterbalance trucks, increasing customer options, which allowed savings on operational costs. The company continues to add fuel-efficient upgrades that uphold the its reputation for ruggedness and quality.
Hyster standards
Hyster has been internationally recognized for its ISO accreditations. The company has earned global certification for IS09001:2008 and ISO1411:2001/2004. These certifications were awarded for the quality and design of internal combustion-powered and electric-powered trucks.
In addition, Hyster has embraced several environmental initiatives, and it also focuses on minimizing environmental impact, reducing energy consumption both in its trucks and its facilities.
