History of Yale Materials Handling
In 1868, Linus Yale and Henry Towne formed the Yale Lock Manufacturing Company. It later became Yale and Towne Manufacturing Co.
During the 1920s, Yale entered the market with an electric battery powered machine. In 1923, the company produced the first electric truck with raising forks and an elevated mast. Today, it is considered the very first forklift truck. It was quickly followed by a series of high-lift platform trucks and tow tractors.
In the 1930s Yale grew and started making trucks in England. It acquired BKS forklifts in Germany. Yale also developed innovations such as power steering, center-control trucks, caster steering, as well as high heat-resistant Class-H silicon insulation in electric motors.
In 1950, Yale added gas, LP gas and diesel-powered forklifts. The company merged with multinational Eaton Manufacturing in 1963.
North American Coal Corporation (NAACO) bought Yale Materials Handling in 1985 . It later became NACCO Industries, Inc.
